Virtual CD Track Nine: What Lay Hidden
So, I thought I'd take a break from the "Gus" music to bring you a new track for the Virtual CD! It's been a while, and I need to bring some balance back to my musical life. I've had a ton of fun this year playing looped guitar and drum music, but that's just between me, the walls, and my neighbors. I decided to jump start myself by revisiting some of my unfinished recordings. Oh, yes, there are way too many of those! And usually, there are good reasons why they get left unfinished...
"What Lay Hidden" is a track I actually started last year, and then abandoned. The first working title was "Appetizer," and then it was "Overcooked." The part I did back then was about the first minute or so, and then I couldn't think of anywhere useful to go. At the time, I recorded a whole lot of drums in 13/8 time, most of which was pointless. I was trying to do something that was essentially a rip-off of "Supper's Ready" by Genesis, so I abandoned all that stuff. In the end, the drum part is pretty basic. Anyway, it got a bit stranger (in a different way) when I came back to it, but I'm happy with how it sounds now.

Apparently, I felt the need to go crazy on the guitar to feel that the song was complete. I tried to change up my guitar sound by using Amplitube (VST plugin) instead of my usual Roland effects. I don't know that it actually sounds different at all in the end! I feel like I sound the same on guitar no matter what I do. I guess it all comes down to the way I play. I didn't plan on doing the weird chromatic stuff in there, but I think it adds to the slightly unhinged flavor of the song. I didn't pay any attention to what I was playing. This is the sound of me losing my cool.
Oh, and the voices. I guess I can't resist. I mined that same source that I used for "Marsupials."
That's all for now. Please listen and tell me what you think.
