Already Robots: In Nonsense Is Strength

I had heard many things about Slimbo Jones, a near-mythical figure, cloaked in mystery...   I'd heard that he was a blues musician from the deep south; I'd heard that he was an idiot savant from the Far East; I'd heard that he was both very young and very old.    All of it turned out to be true!   Slimbo showed up one day with an old sampler under his arm, and recorded me playing a variety of sounds: drums, bass, guitar, xylophone, typewriter, and so on.  His vintage equipment required that he couldn't record more than a few seconds at a time.   In mono, no less!  And it wasn't possible for me to hear what I had already recorded as I played each new part!  He took away a bunch of short samples and constructed this piece.

Download "In Nonsense Is Strength."

It was fun for me to play and not worry about composition, or mixing, or anything else.  That is something that I almost never do anymore.   The track contains a tribute to the late Kurt Vonnegut, which is a sample of Kurt reading his own work, "Breakfast of Champions."

I asked Slimbo what the name of our collaboration should be, and he determined it should be "Already Robots."   The name was found on a board with other shopping items like eggs and milk.  It made sense to me.

Anyway, if this sounds a lot different from what you're used to hearing from me, then it should.   I hope you enjoy it.

I really like the bit at the end, right after the "He will be gone, but not forgotten." Very cool combination of sounds and rhythms there. I also like the part where the giant lizard bites the heads off of the terrified villagers, but come to think of it I might have imagined that part. My bad.
